Stay hydrated – You may not think you exert much energy or require water replenishment while riding bikes, but you do. The harsh sun and even the wind can make you sweat a lot so you need to drink a lot of water to replenish vital minerals that are lost. Drink plenty of water before you get on the bike and consume 1 litre of water every hour.
Apply sunscreen – Sunscreen is an essential part of daily skin care, but when riding a bike it is a must. The wind blowing on the face can be illusory because it makes the sun not feel hot, giving a false impression that skin is not burning. Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher that blocks UVA and UVB rays, generously on all the exposed areas and reapply more often on the nose.
Cover your face – Cover your face and head with a scarf or bandana before starting your bike. This helps to protect your skin and hair from the sun, dirt and sweat. This also keeps the hair in place and avoids embarrassing helmet hair. Coordinate the colour of your scarf or bandana with your riding gear for a stylish look.
Wear big sunglasses – Wear large dark tinted sunglasses or goggles. These will cover a large portion of the eye area and protect it from tanning, dullness and under eye circles.
